My Story

Lara Cavanaugh

Wishing Wellness was born from both professional dedication and deeply personal life experience. My work is not simply something I trained for. It is something I have lived.

I began my journey as a human massage therapist in 2006. What started as a career quickly became a calling. From the very beginning, I was drawn to more than muscle work. I was drawn to the quiet language of the body. I became fascinated with how stress, trauma, love, grief, resilience, and memory imprint themselves into tissue. Over the years, I refined my skills in therapeutic massage, myofascial work, lymphatic techniques, and nervous system support, always listening closely to what the body was communicating beneath the surface.

Eventually, that calling expanded into the animal world. I pursued advanced education in canine, feline, and equine massage therapy, along with reflexology, acupressure, and other integrative modalities. What I discovered confirmed what my heart already knew: animals feel deeply, hold tension deeply, and heal beautifully when met with patience and respect. The principles are the same across species — safety, presence, attunement, and trust.

My passion for memory care is profoundly personal. My mother is living with dementia, and walking this path alongside her has changed me in ways no textbook ever could. Dementia teaches you how to communicate without words. It teaches you how to read subtle shifts in breath, posture, and facial expression. It teaches you that touch can be grounding when language fades. It has strengthened my patience, deepened my empathy, and reminded me that dignity and calm are essential forms of care.

Caregiving also shaped my understanding of serious illness. My father battled leukemia, and witnessing his journey taught me about vulnerability, fatigue, immune stress, and the emotional weight that illness carries. It reinforced my belief that supportive, appropriate touch can provide comfort, connection, and reassurance during life’s most fragile seasons.

Another layer of my story is something I have carried since childhood. I have lived with macular degeneration since the age of ten. Growing up with visual impairment shaped the way I experience the world. It gave me firsthand understanding of what it means to navigate life differently. It cultivated compassion for individuals living with disabilities and heightened my awareness of accessibility, patience, and sensitivity in care.

It also refined my greatest professional tool: touch.

When vision is limited, the hands learn to see. My sense of touch became more developed. Subtle tissue changes, temperature shifts, tension patterns, and energetic cues are things I naturally tune into. My intuition for care grew from necessity and evolved into strength. In many ways, what once felt like a limitation became one of my greatest gifts.

Wishing Wellness is the integration of all of these experiences — nearly two decades of hands-on professional practice since 2006, personal caregiving, lived disability, and a deep love for animals and people alike. My mission is to offer bodywork that honors the nervous system, respects individual boundaries, and meets each being exactly where they are.

Whether I am supporting a senior human client, a memory care patient, a performance horse, or an aging dog, my approach remains the same: slow down, listen deeply, and allow the body to guide the work.

This is not just my profession. It is my calling, shaped by love, resilience, and a lifelong belief that healing begins with presence.
